ze-be-de-be is made up of a whole cast of characters. Drawn and dreamt about by both Sam and Julie, each animal has a special whimsical story and personality.
Agile Crocodile
Even though I am about 16 feet long, I am a pretty fast runner, especially when playing tag. But you'll likely win in a game of wit...my brain is only the size of a walnut! I'm also a pretty cheap date. I can go up to a month without eating a thing.
Clever Fox
I am a little kit, the smallest member of the dog family. My daddy is called a "dog," and my mommy is called a "vixen." Although I am cunning, I can't see very well...but I can hear and smell the world with my powerful ears and nose!
Cheeky Monkey
I'm a sassy monkey and the group I hang out with is called a "troop." When I'm upset, I will yawn or show you my teeth. But don't worry, when I'm ready to make-up, I will let you pick out the bugs from my fur!
Cool Cat
Talk to me and I will meow back...this is the way I speak to humans, but not to other cats. I love to play games, like hide and seek, chasing balls and climbing trees. Don't worry about leaving a night light on for me...I have great night vision and my whiskers help to guide me too!
Darling Dragonfly
I have wings that glisten in the sun and a slim, trim body. I am actually born under the water and live there until I am 5! When the time is right I come up into the air and spread my wings. I am a symbol of courage, strength and happiness.
Gentle Giraffe
I am the tallest animal on the planet. I was already 6 feet tall when I was born. I sleep for only 30 minutes a day...who ever said sleeping makes you grow? My dad is called a bull and my mama is called a cow. I guess that makes me a calf.
Gregarious Hippo
I'm a whole lot of hippo, weighing up to 3 ½ tons. I like to be amongst my own, relaxing by the water side. Even though I'm too heavy to swim, I bounce along the bottom of the river with my friends.
Horse Play
I'm a young horse and they call me a foal. My mom is known as a mare and my dad a stallion. I will become a grown-up (that is a horse), when I turn 5 years old...that's also when I get all my teeth! I can move in four ways: walk, trot, canter, and gallop.
Leap Frog
I am an amphibian...I live both in the water and on land. I hop from lily pad to lily pad, catching flies with my tongue. My family and friends belong to a group that is called an "army."
Lion Heart
I live with my family, which is called a pride, deep in the African bushes. Even though I am the King of the Jungle and rule with all of my heart, I'm a pretty lazy cat. I sleep most of the day in the shade, and wait for the Lionesses to bring home the "bacon".
Lonely Lobster
I live alone in small spaces or under rocks and like to eat small fish, mollusks and worms. I like rocky, sandy, or muddy bottoms between the shoreline and just before the deep sea. If no one bothers me I can live for a very long time and I never stop growing. My biggest cousin was almost 45 pounds!
Majestic Elephant
I'm the largest land animal. Eat 300 lbs of food a day and you too might look like me! I'm revered in many cultures and religions...that's not difficult to see. My form is unique - have you seen my amazing trunk - and I'm quite graceful, despite my size.
Playful Penguin
I like to play just like you. My favorite things to do are sliding on my belly in the cold snow, surfing the waves in the ocean and having diving competitions with my friends. Though I can't fly, I can jump really high...over 6 feet in the air!
Quiet Mouse
I am small and like my peace and quiet. Loud noises can actually make me faint! You can leave me a piece of cheese to nibble on, but I would much rather have some peanut butter. If you visit me at home, be sure to take off your shoes...I like to keep my house very clean.
Rambunctious Rhino
I am the second largest land animal, after the elephant...and all I eat is grass! I can be unruly, though, because I can't see so well. I look tough with my strong horns, but did you know that my horns are actually made up of matted hair?
Silly Seahorse
I have a beautiful spine and a curly tail that helps me swim. The shape of my face and head look a lot like a horse! I also love to hide in sea grass meadows and coral reefs. When my friends and I get excited we turn bright colors!
Sneaky Shark
I am one of the fiercest fish in the world. But don't be afraid. I eat mostly plankton and sea creatures and rarely nibble on people. I glide through the water very quietly and use my sense of smell and keen hearing to get around. Most of my friends live about 25 years but some have reached 100!
Social Butterfly
I love to fly in the summer breeze, socializing with the bees and flowers in the garden. While I'm having fun, I do have an important job to do...spreading pollen all over different plants and helping farmers. Try to see me flap my wings - it's faster than you can blink!
Song Bird
I am part of a special species of birds that can sing, although not all of us have good voices. I love to sing, especially when Spring arrives. Singing my pretty song is the way I let other birds know where I am in case they want to join me in a tune.
Ze-be-de-be Zebra
Zebras are unique, just like you. My stripes are like no other. I love to play with lots of friends...hundreds of other zebras, wildebeests and gazelle. But my favorite thing to do is to run. I was ready to run an hour after I was born!
What is ze-be-de-be?
Conceived in 2007 ze-be-de-be is a children's fashions and home goods company. It was created with the notion that moms and kids would enjoy collecting and learning about animals and their natural habitat when presented in a fun unique way. Each product is a showcase for an original animal design that comes complete with a name and a story. The name was inspired by children's music from South Africa that celebrates the wonderful and individual qualities in all of us. Ze-be-de-be is a whimsical take on a special zebra who recognizes the importance of being unique. The brand has grown from a few basic concepts to a full line of goods for the young and young at heart.
Who is ze-be-de-be?
Ze-be-de-be is Samira Schmitz and Julie Korb. Full time moms, both were looking for a creative outlet during their time away from their traditional careers. Samira's background in finance and Julie's in communications and PR, have proved to be an effective combination for the formation of the business. But beyond the nuts and bolts, both contribute to the creative process. Each and every design has been drawn, cut, stitched and selected by both.
